Abby Aceves Artist
About
Born in Nogales, Sonora, México in 1985, I identify as she/her. I am a Los Angeles-based self-taught painter and interdisciplinary artist. I earned a bachelor’s degree from The Superior Fashion Center, Edith Martin in Jalisco, México. Following this, I spent 7 years working in the fashion industry with my own label before transitioning to a career in fine arts. Having spent half of my life in México, I felt the need to broaden my possibilities in the art world and significantly changed my personal journey by relocating to Los Angeles, California, a place I’ve called home for the past 6 years. My work centers around my culture, roots, and social engagement, allowing my memories to inhabit a space in my creativity without forcing a narrative. I am particularly drawn to the intersection between fashion and fine arts, exploring them through textures and colors. My work is rooted in storytelling, with a focus on the female figure, predominantly women of color, as a powerful means of expression, traversing the spectrum between empowerment and vulnerability. Utilizing figurative elements, symbols, color, texture, and composition, I employ these elements as a language to convey contemporary Mexican culture, a primary source of inspiration. Each character within my mysterious narratives possesses a full and complex personality.
